Obituary of Harriet Serchuk

Please share a memory of Harriet to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Sept. 4, 1929—Jan. 18, 2018 (Aged 88 years)

Harriet Serchuk passed away peacefully on the evening of Jan. 18, 2018, surrounded by three of her children: Stuart, Sharon and David after having been in hospice care for the past month, at Villa Marie Claire, in Saddle River, NJ. She died after having fought melanoma that could no longer be treated and was supported during that time by the love and support of her family and friends.  Harriet was a loving personable woman who was genuinely interested in people and beloved by all who knew her, and lived a full life dedicated to family, friends, and good works. She was actively involved in several charitable organizations including the League of Women Voters, Hadassah, B’nai Brith, and ORT America; serving as president of the local chapter of the latter organization. Harriet grew up in Brooklyn, NY in the East New York area, in a first generation immigrant family in far-from-wealthy circumstances. From this modest upbringing Harriet learned the value of thrift and to not be wasteful though Harriet was always generous with her resources and her love. She could be counted on to be there for you in any way she could, including simply by listening, and worked to teach her children these important values for one another and to each other and for them to practices these principles to the people around them. One of these values was to remember to give to charity because, “there are always, people who have less than you do.” She lived the majority of her adult life in New Jersey, first in Closter where she lovingly raised her children and then in Fort Lee. She is survived by her four adult children—Stuart Serchuk, Barbara Serchuk, Sharon Serchuk Rosano and David Serchuk; her four grandchildren—Sophia, Samantha, Stella and Samuel; her son-in-law Richard Rosano, daughter-in-law Randi Skaggs, her sister Ruth; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was a caring and loving friend to anyone who needed a friend, and a surrogate mom to many who weren’t as fortunate as her own children. She was a joy to all who knew, she will be missed dearly.

Per his wishes a graveside funeral service will be held at 1pm on Sunday, January 21st, at Beth El Cemetery in Paramus.
