Obituary of Marianne Goldstick

Marianne Goldstick, long-time resident of Englewood Cliffs, died at home on May 3, 2020 at the age of 97. She was born in Vienna, Austria in 1922 to Hilda Mittler Lourie and Paul Lourie. In 1938 her father was imprisoned by the Nazis. Upon relinquishing their property, the family was able to escape. They emigrated to London, where Marianne completed high school at the age of 16. Denied access to the U.S., they managed to settle in Vancouver, Canada where Marianne graduated from the University of British Columbia. She earned her master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Toronto where she met her husband, Wilfred Goldstick. They married after the war, in 1946, and immigrated to Manhattan. Married 66 years, Wilfred predeceased her in 2012. The Goldsticks moved to Englewood Cliffs in 1957 and became active members of the Jewish community. Marianne did extensive and varied volunteer work from the 1960s through the 1990s. She was an active member of Temple Sinai of Bergen County , and managed the Sisterhood’s Judaica shop for years. She served as president of the local United Jewish Appeal Women’s Division, and worked tirelessly to resettle Soviet Jews. Understanding well the challenges of being an immigrant, Marianne helped find them resources, services, and jobs. In addition, Marianne tutored adults earning their high school diplomas. Proficient in Braille, she regularly transcribed textbooks for the blind. She had a fierce dedication to tzedakah and lived a life performing good deeds. In 1991 she and Wilfred became founding members of Chavurah Beth Shalom in Alpine, NJ. The Chavurah’s rabbi, and a friend for over 50 years, Rabbi Nat Benjamin, officiated at her funeral. Restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic allowed only her three children to attend. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Marianne is survived by her loving children, Toba Goldstick of New York City; Naomi and Gary Rosner of Baltimore, Maryland; and Jonathan and Karen Goldstick of New York City; and grandchildren, Alex Goldstick and his wife Rachel Ball; Evan Goldstick; Joshua Rosner; and Molly Rosner.
