Obituary of Barry Wien

Barry Wien, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, passed away on December 22, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was 76 years old. A Jersey City native, he served as longtime owner and director of Fort Lee’s Eden Memorial and Wien and Son in Long Island.

Barry began his career in funeral services at a young age, working at Wien & Wien, the funeral home founded by his grandfather and great uncle over a century ago, operated by his beloved father Harry and adored uncle Arthur.

Barry took over the business at 21 years old and, with his cousin Frank, went on to make Wien & Wien the premiere name in Jewish funerals in Northern New Jersey. The quintessential funeral director, he took immense pride in assisting families in their time of need for over 57 years.

An active yet humble force in the community, Barry belonged to the NJSFDA, NDA, JFDA, and KAVOD and was a board member of the Jewish Home in Rockleigh, as well as a respected member of the New York Board of Rabbis’ lay advisory board. Among the congregations he worked with are Temple Sinai, Temple Emanu-El of Closter, Hampton Synagogue and the New Synagogue of Fort Lee. He was chairman and liaison to numerous cemetery societies and associations, including the Claremore Club, Workmen’s Circle, Sephardic Brotherhood, Linas Hazedeck, Defender’s Benevolent, Liberty Benevolent, and many others that enabled him to help families bury their loved ones through the years. Barry’s family, partners and staff are dedicated to continuing the Wien family’s enduring legacy of compassion, devotion and advocacy in times of need.

Barry’s true passion in life lay with his family and friends. His tireless work connected him to literally thousands of families over the years, many with whom he made deep and lasting friendships. Known for his charismatic, vibrant and social nature, he loved dining out at restaurants, boating, tennis and spending leisure time in the Hamptons and Florida.

A devoted son of Harry and Eleanore, beloved brother to Francine, Barry was an attentive and loving father to his two children, Harriet and Charles, and grandfather to Eleanore, all of whom he adored and cherished. They will continue to honor his legacy through the generous sharing of love and reverence for people from all walks of life.
