Solomon Arbeiter

Obituary of Solomon Arbeiter

Arbeiter, Solomon, age 84, a 50-year resident of Leonia NJ, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday March 17, 2021.  Born and raised in New York, NY, he was a Research Planning Officer for the College Board for 20 years.

Preceding his long career at the College Board, Solomon served in several prestigious roles as a passionate defender of civil and human rights. After earning degrees at Brooklyn College and University of California, Berkley, he first worked at the NYS Commission for Human Rights, before later becoming Director of Higher Education in the Office of Civil Rights at the US Dept. of Health.  During that time, he was honored as the Florina Lasker Fellow in Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, and a National Institute of Public Affairs Fellow at Princeton University. His belief and passion for education, higher learning, and equal opportunity for all, guided his work.

Beloved husband of 53 years to the late Jean Arbeiter (nee: Sonkin). Devoted father of Claire Arbeiter, Dan Arbeiter and his wife Jill, and Peter Arbeiter and his wife Neeta. Cherished grandfather of Philip, Jacob, Rebecca, Dev and Dilan. Dearly missed by Iris Harris and Kenneth Schwartz.

Solomon was a raucous, fun-loving, affectionate, life-affirming man, and an unshakeable optimist to the end—notably, he was a lifelong Knicks fan. An avid reader of history, he and Jean were world travelers, and yet he was happiest at home in the company of his family and wide circle of friends.
